New APC Automatic Pallet Changer Solution
A new choice for large mold machining: HSA-EAY with APC brings continuous automation to 5-face gantry machining

Advancing large-workpiece machining toward continuous automated production

As demand for automation and higher productivity continues to grow across the die and mold, semiconductor equipment, and precision machinery industries, Hartford has introduced an Automatic Pallet Changer (APC) solution for the HSA-EAY five-face gantry machining center.

By integrating dual pallets, a high-capacity tool magazine, automatic doors, and a high-performance spindle, the HSA-EAY transforms a conventional machining center into a highly productive automated machining cell, meeting the requirements of long-duration, high-efficiency production in mold manufacturing and semiconductor machining.

With a conventional single-table configuration, workpiece unloading, table cleaning, lifting, positioning, and setup of the next workpiece can only begin after machining has been completed. For large workpieces, a single setup may take approximately 2–4 hours.

Equipped with two automatic doors and a dedicated operator station in the APC loading area, the system allows operators to load, position, and clamp large workpieces safely and conveniently outside the machining enclosure.

This converts machining and workpiece preparation from a sequential process into a parallel workflow, significantly reducing non-cutting time.

Higher Machine Utilization | 18–20 Hours of Effective Cutting per Day

The primary benefit of an APC system is not simply faster pallet exchange. Its greater value lies in allowing a high-value 5-face gantry machining center to spend more time performing productive cutting operations.

Based on projected operating conditions, a conventional single-table machine typically delivers approximately 8–10 hours of effective spindle cutting time per day, or around 40% utilization.

With the APC system, effective spindle cutting time can potentially increase to approximately 18–20 hours per day, reaching 75–85% utilization. Under suitable production conditions, overall capacity may increase by approximately 80–100%.

For large-scale die and mold machining with long cycle times, this can substantially reduce productivity losses caused by machines waiting for workpiece setup.

Large-Workpiece Automation | Extended X-Axis, Automatic Doors, and Safer External Setup

To accommodate the APC workflow, the HSA-EAY can be configured with an extended X-axis travel, providing sufficient space for extra-long workpieces and automatic pallet exchange. The machine enclosure can also be enlarged accordingly.

Equipped with two automatic doors and a dedicated APC-area operating station, the system allows operators to load, lift, position, and clamp large workpieces in a safer and more accessible external area.

This minimizes the need for personnel to enter the machining enclosure while improving the workflow for large-workpiece loading, unloading, and machine operation.

Successful automation requires not only automatic workpiece exchange but also sufficient tooling capacity for long and complex machining processes.

The HSA-EAY can be equipped with a tool magazine holding up to 240 tools, supporting a wide range of roughing, finishing, drilling, tapping, and multi-face machining operations while reducing manual tool changes.

The built-in B12K spindle helps minimize transmission errors and vibration while maintaining machining stability and accuracy.

By integrating an APC pallet changer, high-capacity tool magazine, and high-performance spindle, the HSA-EAY creates an automated machining environment suitable for extended periods of continuous operation.

Die and Mold and Semiconductor Applications | From 5-Face Machining to an Automated Production Cell

The HSA-EAY with APC is particularly suitable for machining large automotive dies, injection molds, mold bases, and other demanding die and mold machining applications.

Its 5-face machining capability reduces the need to turn and repeatedly reposition large workpieces, while the APC system minimizes waiting time between machining cycles, further improving overall production efficiency.

The solution is also suitable for machining large semiconductor equipment components, including equipment bases, aluminum structural components, vacuum chamber parts, precision frames, and automation system structures.

By integrating 5-face machining, automatic pallet exchange, a 240-tool magazine, and extended continuous operation, the HSA-EAY is more than a large machining center—it is an automated production cell designed for large and complex workpieces.

HSA-EAY × APC—continuous machining inside, simultaneous workpiece preparation outside, delivering less downtime, higher machine utilization, and greater productivity.
